NYC E-Mobility Crash Data

Original analysis conducted in September, 2023.

Story behind the story: I caught several complaints from citizens at a Queens community board meeting about being struck by people riding e-bikes and e-scooters and having no recourse or accountability. This led me to investigate the issue for an article for a class, and once the claims were substantiated and I learned of even more, I decided to dig deeper and do a data analysis of NYPD collision reports. It showed a shocking and evident trend that backed up the community lived experience. It also showed another issue—the NYPD does not have a specific denotation in their reporting system for this type of incident, or for these types of vehicles. However, It was really rewarding to be able to have empowered the people I interviewed by proving their problem wasn’t just theirs through the lens of data.

DOT Road Repair Gets Quicker

Original analysis conducted in December, 2023, chart redesigned in February, 2024.

Story behind the story: This was another one I picked up from the community board. I heard a very passionate speech from a resident about the craters left behind on her street for months while they awaited repaving. After further investigation, I discovered the issue in front of the city council and I knew it was time to perform some analysis. This one took a lot of trial and error to design a formula that would match cross streets to pair the DOT schedule entry for a road milling to the corresponding road filling. It was a long day, but I was actually able to prove it was getting better, not worse.
